London in One Day: The Perfect Itinerary for 2026

Make the most of 24 hours in London with this carefully planned walking itinerary.

8:00 AM: Westminster and Big Ben

Start your day at Westminster Tube station and emerge to the iconic view of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. Walk across Westminster Bridge for the classic photograph looking back at Parliament with the London Eye behind you. This area is quieter early in the morning, making it perfect for crowd-free photos.

9:00 AM: Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey opens at 9:30am. Arrive early to beat the queues and spend an hour exploring the coronation church, Poets' Corner, and the cloisters. Pre-booking your ticket online saves time and money. The multimedia guide is excellent and included with entry.

10:30 AM: Buckingham Palace and St James's Park

Walk through St James's Park (one of London's prettiest parks) towards Buckingham Palace. If the Changing of the Guard is happening (check dates online, usually Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday), arrive by 10:45am for a good viewing spot. Even without the ceremony, the Palace facade and Victoria Memorial are worth seeing.

12:00 PM: South Bank and Borough Market

Take the Tube or walk to Waterloo and along the South Bank. Pass the London Eye, the Royal Festival Hall, the National Theatre, and Tate Modern. Cross over to Borough Market for lunch. This 800-year-old market is the best place in London for a quick, quality meal. Try the grilled cheese at Kappacasein or the steak sandwich at Roast.

2:00 PM: Tower of London

Take the Tube from London Bridge to Tower Hill. The Tower of London deserves at least 2 hours. See the Crown Jewels first (queues build up in the afternoon), then join a free Beefeater tour for entertaining stories about the Tower's 1,000-year history. Walk the walls and see the famous ravens before you leave.

4:30 PM: Tower Bridge and The Shard

Walk across Tower Bridge (the walkway is free) and head to The Shard for sunset views from the 72nd floor. On a clear day, you can see for 40 miles. Book a sunset time slot in advance, as these sell out quickly. Alternatively, skip The Shard and walk along the South Bank back towards Westminster for free views.

6:30 PM: Dinner in Soho or Covent Garden

Head to Soho or Covent Garden for dinner. Soho offers everything from Chinatown dumplings to Michelin-starred dining. Covent Garden has great restaurants plus free street performers in the piazza. For a classic London experience, try fish and chips at one of the traditional pubs in the area.

8:30 PM: West End Show or River Walk

If you have booked a West End show (book weeks in advance for popular shows), head to the theatre. Otherwise, walk along the South Bank at night when the buildings are beautifully lit. The view of St Paul's Cathedral illuminated across the river is unforgettable. End with a drink at one of the riverside bars.
