Is The Shard Worth It, or Should You Do the Free Sky Garden?

This is one of the most common London viewpoint questions, and the honest answer depends on one thing: whether you want to look down on London from the very top, or look across London with the famous skyline in front of you. The View from The Shard, from £19, puts you higher than anything else in Western Europe, with an open-air deck on level 72. The Sky Garden, at 20 Fenchurch Street, is free and sits lower, but it has a lush indoor garden, bars, and, crucially, a view that includes The Shard itself. Neither is objectively better. They are different experiences, and if you have a spare morning, doing both costs you only £19 plus a little planning.

The Shard rises to 244 metres, and the viewing experience takes you to floors 68, 69, and 72. Level 72 is a partially open-air sky deck, which is the single biggest thing the Sky Garden cannot match: you feel the wind and hear the city rather than looking through glass. On a clear day the views reach up to 40 miles, taking in Tower Bridge, St Paul's, the Thames snaking east and west, and, on the clearest days, Wembley Stadium. Tickets start from £19, which is genuinely reasonable for the highest public viewpoint in the country. Sunset slots are the most popular and the most romantic, and they sell out first, so book ahead if you want that golden-hour timing.

The Sky Garden occupies the top three floors of the Walkie Talkie building at 20 Fenchurch Street. It is genuinely free, but free comes with a condition: you must book a timed slot in advance online, and popular slots vanish quickly, released a few weeks ahead. What you get is a three-storey indoor garden filled with subtropical plants, an open-air terrace, and several bars and restaurants where you can buy a drink, though you are never obliged to. At roughly 155 metres it is lower than The Shard, but that lower angle is arguably more photogenic, because The Shard and Tower Bridge both sit in your frame rather than beneath your feet. It is the best free view in central London.

Height is not everything. From the very top of The Shard, some landmarks are so far below that they shrink, and you obviously cannot photograph The Shard because you are standing in it. From the Sky Garden, the composition is friendlier: you are high enough for a sweeping panorama but low enough that individual buildings still read clearly, with The Shard as a dramatic centrepiece. If your priority is a bucket-list altitude and an open-air deck, The Shard wins. If your priority is the best free photo of the London skyline, the Sky Garden wins. Weather matters more than either: on a grey, low-cloud day, save your money and your slot for a clearer one, because both views depend entirely on visibility.

These two are not the only games in town. The London Eye, from £29, gives a slowly rotating capsule view from 135 metres right on the river, which many couples prefer for its unhurried, semi-private feel. St Paul's Cathedral, from £27, is a different proposition again: you climb 528 steps to the Golden Gallery around the dome for a 360-degree outdoor view, so you earn the panorama and get a cathedral tour on the way up. If you are ranking purely on value, the free Sky Garden and the £19 Shard sit at the top, with the London Eye and St Paul's as strong paid alternatives when you want a specific experience rather than just altitude.

The smartest plan is to combine them. Book a free morning Sky Garden slot, enjoy the gardens and a coffee, then walk about 15 minutes across to London Bridge for a booked Shard slot, ideally timed so the second one lands near sunset. That way you get the friendly, skyline-in-frame free view and the highest open-air deck in the country in a single outing, for a total of £19. If you can only choose one and money is tight, take the free Sky Garden slot. If you can only choose one and you want the definitive top-of-London moment, pay for The Shard.
