Best Day Trips from London by Train in 2026

The best places to visit on a day trip from London, all easily reached by train in under two hours.

Windsor: 25 Minutes from Paddington

Windsor Castle is the world's oldest and largest occupied castle, and it is just 25 minutes by train from London Paddington. Highlights include the State Apartments, St George's Chapel (burial place of monarchs including Elizabeth II), and the Changing of the Guard ceremony. The pretty town of Windsor has riverside walks, shops, and restaurants. Allow 3-4 hours for the castle and an hour for the town. Trains run frequently.

Bath: 1 Hour 20 Minutes from Paddington

The UNESCO World Heritage city of Bath is one of the most beautiful cities in England. The Roman Baths are remarkably preserved and the audio guide (narrated by Bill Bryson) is superb. Walk along the Royal Crescent, visit Bath Abbey, and stop at Sally Lunn's for the famous Bath Bun. The Georgian architecture throughout the city is stunning. Allow a full day. An advance return ticket costs around ยฃ25-40.

Brighton: 1 Hour from Victoria

London's seaside escape is just an hour south by train. Brighton has a pebbly beach, the eccentric Royal Pavilion (a Regency palace with Indian-inspired architecture), The Lanes (narrow shopping streets full of independent boutiques), and a vibrant food scene. The pier has traditional fairground rides. It is perfect for a relaxed day away from the city, especially in summer. Trains run from London Victoria and London Bridge.

Oxford: 1 Hour from Paddington

The city of dreaming spires is home to the world's most famous university and over 800 years of academic history. Visit the Bodleian Library, Christ Church college (which inspired the Harry Potter dining hall), the Radcliffe Camera, and the free Ashmolean Museum. The covered market has been trading since 1774. Oxford is manageable in a full day. A guided walking tour helps you access colleges that are otherwise hard to find.

Cambridge: 50 Minutes from King's Cross

Oxford's rival offers a quieter, greener atmosphere centred around the River Cam. Punting past the college Backs is the quintessential Cambridge experience (hire a punt or take a guided tour). Visit King's College Chapel, the Fitzwilliam Museum (free), and the Eagle pub where Watson and Crick announced their discovery of DNA. Fast trains from King's Cross take just 50 minutes.

Canterbury: 1 Hour from St Pancras

Canterbury Cathedral has been a place of pilgrimage since Thomas Becket was murdered here in 1170. The medieval city has a charming character, with cobbled streets, half-timbered buildings, and the River Stour winding through the centre. The Canterbury Tales attraction brings Chaucer's stories to life. Highspeed trains from St Pancras International take just one hour.

Stonehenge and Salisbury

Reaching Stonehenge independently requires a train to Salisbury (1 hour 20 minutes from Waterloo) then a bus. However, a guided tour from London is usually more practical and includes transport, commentary, and often a stop at another destination like Bath or Windsor.

Booking Tips

Train tickets are cheapest when booked in advance (usually 6-12 weeks ahead). Use Trainline or National Rail to find the best fares. Off-peak tickets (valid after 9:30am) save significantly compared to peak fares. Railcards (16-25, Two Together, Family & Friends) offer a third off most fares. For Stonehenge and the Cotswolds, a guided tour from London is more practical than public transport.
